Leadership: a vague, ill-defined buzzword, or the ‘blind spot’ of our time? By being part of the MSLS programme, we get in touch with some of the finest leadership literature, research and practitioners, while at the same time, in the ‘outer world’, there seems to be a serious lack of leadership in institutions of every kind, whether they are public, private or in civil society.
Global climate change is perhaps the most pressing and important problem currently facing humanity. It is also unique by virtue of being a truly systemic problem of vast complexity: it affects every one of us, and is directly affected by every one of our actions. Like nothing else, dealing with climate change calls upon us to engage in effective collective decision making on a global scale. The spectacular emergence of the Internet and associated information technology has enabled unprecedented opportunities for such interactions. To date, however, these interactions have been incoherent and dispersed, contributions vary widely in quality, and there has been no clear way to converge on well-supported decisions concerning what actions, both grand and ground-level, humanity should take to solve its most pressing problems. The goal of this project is to address this important challenge through the creation of a new class of web-mediated discussion and decision making forum, called the “Collaboratorium”. This system, currently under development, will use an innovative combination of internet-mediated interaction, collectively generated idea repositories, computer simulation, and explicit representation of argumentation to help large, diverse, and geographically-dispersed groups systematically explore, evaluate, and come to decisions concerning systemic challenges. Read more at the MIT [...]

Lee J. Colan & David Cottrell – “The myth of time management never dies. Many people enroll in ‘time management’ classes and learn techniques like making to-do lists. That’s fine. Lists can be useful, even satisfying. It’s great to experience that rush—Ahhhh!—as we check something off the list. However, by the end of the day, or the week, or the month, most people discover projects that are still not checked off and some projects they haven’t even started. That’s when frustration begins to set in. The time is gone, and there’s no way to get it back. You can’t manufacture time, you can’t reproduce time, you can’t slow time down or turn it around and make it run in the other direction. You can’t trade bad hours for good ones, either. About all the time management you can do is to cram as much productive work as pos¬sible into each day. What you can manage, however, is your attention. Attention is a resource we all possess. It’s a lot like time. In fact, as long as we are awake, we produce a continuous stream of it. But how effectively do we use this valuable resource? That depends on where we [...]

SUSTAINABILITY: OUR CHALLENGE, OUR FUTURE Sustainability does not only refer to maintaining environmental balance and renewal. Sustainability encapsulates three facets of life: the environment, society and the economy. We live our lives in the overlaps and intersections of these facets, and our actions and attitudes help shape them. Their changing shapes in turn affect the way we are able to live our lives. The negative effects of unsustainable behaviour are not easily contained. As has been proven by the global crises in food, the economy and the environment, the concept of the global village has gone beyond being a useful analogy to being a hard reality, making clear the need to adopt a global sense of social responsibility. With these things in mind, as the energizers of today and the holders of tomorrow, it is imperative that youth embrace the challenge of sustainability in its fullness as they help pave the way forward through the 21st century and beyond. Youth action, inclusion, and their full participation are key to developing today’s world for the generations of today and tomorrow and central to a sustainable existence. Want to know what’s happening around the world today? Read more at UN Youth… People [...]

With six months left to the Copenhagen climate negotiations the world faces multiple crises. All are a direct or indirect result of an economic policy that stimulates value creation on the short term with disastrous effects on the medium or long term. Sustainable development forms the core of the solutions for these crises. Between 1992, when the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was singed, and 2012, when the Kyoto Protocol’s objectives must be realised, 7300 days have passed and worldwide CO2 emissions have been reduced by 5,3%. Between December 2009 and 2020, which is 3650 days, the world should lessen over 30% in their CO2 emissions. That means that in half the time we must realise six times more emission reduction than in the twenty years before. These figures show that if we want to solve the multiple crises we need to act now. There have been attempts to speed up this process but all failed. One of the most important reasons was the enormous distrust between nations to implement and execute the proposed plans. The USA are waiting for countries like China, India and Brazil to take action, but these countries are waiting for the USA to [...]

‘If we can improve the images of the world, perhaps we can improve the world’ Wim Wenders Wim Wenders’ words have perhaps never been more relevant to a movie than in the case of Home. Following directly on from Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, Home is, of course, a film with a message that sets out to shift people’s perceptions, make us aware of the tectonic movements at work and incite us to act. Although there is a general trend in our societies towards an awareness of ecological issues, concrete action is still too little, too slow—which constitutes in some ways the creed of the movie: It’s too late to be a pessimist. But Home is more than a documentary with a message, it’s a magnificent movie in its own right. Every breathtaking shot shows the Earth—our Earth—as we have never seen it before. Every image seems to be saying, “Look how beautiful the Earth is, look at what we’re destroying, and above all look at all these wonders that we can still preserve.” When I started working on the project with Yann, I was convinced that the idea of shooting a movie entirely from up in the sky, without [...]

What are the legal and human rights implications of climate change? As the evidence becomes stronger and the science more serious, people in countries, companies, institutions and professions everywhere are taking up the issue of climate change and sounding the alarm. Among these concerned global citizens are lawyers and legal professionals. To gather this community together, law students at the University of Washington organized a conference called Three Degrees: The Law of Climate Change and Human Rights Conference. On May 28 and 29, members of the legal community and others came together to further explore the possibility of using human rights law as a way to address climate change. According to the conference organizers, “the application of both codified and customary international and national human rights law will be critical in addressing the massive humanitarian crises ignored by technical market solutions to climate change and moderate political reforms.” Read more at Worldchanging… People who looked at this item also looked at… Climate Collaboratorium: Harnessing Collective Intelligence to Address Climate Change Issues Related items HOME: It’s Too Late To Be A Pessimist Green Economy Initiative Earth Hour How our economy is killing the Earth The Climate for Change

Interview with Jacques Weber by Meriem Bouamrane With the financial and economic crisis tightening its grip around the world, many researchers, organizations and institutions are being galvanized into action. Terms like Green Deal or Global New Green Deal are circulating and, with natural resources becoming scarcer, there is talk of creating a tax system based on ecosystem services. Here, the economist and anthropologist Jacques Weber, Director of Research at the International Centre for Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD) in France, analyses the ins and outs of an idea that is gaining ground: a shift towards green economics, to ensure that the global economy emerges from the crisis on a surer footing than before. What is your analysis of the current crisis? [...] The current crisis is indubitably financial in origin and would have happened sooner or later. But the fact that it came after steep price rises for petrol, minerals and food suggests that the crisis is one of objective rarity of non-renewable and renewable natural resources. It is the expression of this crisis that is financial. Could the crisis be a blessing for sustainable development? If the crisis is a result of the growing scarcity of natural resources, the [...]

On 22 October 2008, UNEP and leading economists launched the Green Economy Initiative (GEI) aimed at seizing an historic opportunity to bring about tomorrow’s economy today. The GEI, which will initially run for a period of two years, has three key elements: the Green Economy report, that will provide an overview, analysis and synthesis of how public policy can help markets accelerate the transition towards a green economy; The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB), a partnership project focusing on valuation issues; and finally the Green Jobs report, published in September 2008, that looked at employment trends.
MPs highlight need for UK to work towards creating an ambitious climate change, and a modern and sustainable economy Sir, In 2009 we face two key challenges: economic recovery and climate change. We can and must tackle both together. The UK must move to a low-carbon economy: not just to secure an ambitious climate change deal at the UN climate conference in Copenhagen in December (COP15) but also to build a modern and sustainable economy that will secure Britain’s competitiveness and future prosperity. We are seeing many of the large economies implementing stimulus packages that include a significant percentage of low-carbon investment (for example, Korea 69 per cent, China 34 per cent, Germany 19 per cent and the US 16 per cent), but the UK’s package currently contains only 7 per cent. We risk being left behind. Read more at TimesOnline… People who looked at this item also looked at… How Can Sustainable Development Be Measured?

They simply don’t understand we have instincts that go beyond money. Things like coffee shops and conviviality. What is called “economics” is really psychology on steroids. It starts with a model of human nature and extrapolates an entire scenario for how the world works from that. The model is homo economicus, the myopic protoganist of the economics texts. This hypothetical person has no social affinities, no lapses of judgment or hang-ups, no capacity even for thinking about anyone besides him or herself. He goes through life with an unfailing and relentless calculus of personal loss and gain.
Today, students are playing crucial roles in opposition movements throughout the world, fighting for democracy and the implementation of human rights. Though they often are the first ones to climb the barricades, sadly they are also the first ones to be forgotten. The purpose of the Student Peace Prize is to make their voices heard, their sacrifices known and contribute to their cause in any way we can. The Student Peace Prize 2009 is awarded the human rights activist Elkouria “Rabab” Amidane from Western Sahara. Amidane is awarded the Prize for her work for human rights, students’ rights and peace in Western Sahara. Amidane is contributing to inform the world about the discrimination and the violence that the Sahrawis are exposed to by the Moroccan government. Even though Amidane uses peaceful means in her fight for human rights, she has been exposed to torture and arrested by the Moroccan police several times. Read more at OpenDemocracy… The Student Peace Prize ceremony took place as part of ISFiT, the International Student Festival in Trondheim, with peace building as a central topic. Guest speaker was Nobel Peace Laureate Betty Williams. During the festival, among others WMDC Chairman Hans Blix and Nobel Laureates [...]

It a time of rising unemployment and economic insecurity, some argue that protecting the environment is a ‘luxury’; but a new report, Tackling Climate Change, Reducing Poverty shows that tackling climate change actually offers a huge opportunity to boost the economy and tackle UK poverty at the same time. For example, government investment in home insulation, public transport and community projects to improve local resilience would not only cut carbon emissions, they would also create new ‘green collar jobs’ and help those living on low incomes. The report, from a new coalition of leading UK environmental and social justice groups (convened by Oxfam and nef, including Friends of the Earth and the Royal College of Nursing) called on government to take a joined-up approach to tackling climate change and poverty.
