SUSTAINABILITY: OUR CHALLENGE, OUR FUTURE Sustainability does not only refer to maintaining environmental balance and renewal. Sustainability encapsulates three facets of life: the environment, society and the economy. We live our lives in the overlaps and intersections of these facets, and our actions and attitudes help shape them. Their changing shapes in turn affect the way we are able to live our lives. The negative effects of unsustainable behaviour are not easily contained. As has been proven by the global crises in food, the economy and the environment, the concept of the global village has gone beyond being a useful analogy to being a hard reality, making clear the need to adopt a global sense of social responsibility. With these things in mind, as the energizers of today and the holders of tomorrow, it is imperative that youth embrace the challenge of sustainability in its fullness as they help pave the way forward through the 21st century and beyond. Youth action, inclusion, and their full participation are key to developing today’s world for the generations of today and tomorrow and central to a sustainable existence. Want to know what’s happening around the world today? Read more at UN Youth… People [...]

Today, students are playing crucial roles in opposition movements throughout the world, fighting for democracy and the implementation of human rights. Though they often are the first ones to climb the barricades, sadly they are also the first ones to be forgotten. The purpose of the Student Peace Prize is to make their voices heard, their sacrifices known and contribute to their cause in any way we can. The Student Peace Prize 2009 is awarded the human rights activist Elkouria “Rabab” Amidane from Western Sahara. Amidane is awarded the Prize for her work for human rights, students’ rights and peace in Western Sahara. Amidane is contributing to inform the world about the discrimination and the violence that the Sahrawis are exposed to by the Moroccan government. Even though Amidane uses peaceful means in her fight for human rights, she has been exposed to torture and arrested by the Moroccan police several times. Read more at OpenDemocracy… The Student Peace Prize ceremony took place as part of ISFiT, the International Student Festival in Trondheim, with peace building as a central topic. Guest speaker was Nobel Peace Laureate Betty Williams. During the festival, among others WMDC Chairman Hans Blix and Nobel Laureates [...]

The new publication “Growing Together: Youth and the Work of the United Nations” was launched on International Youth Day. The UN Programme on Youth coordinated this inter-agency effort which shows how the United Nations system as a whole, supports youth development through a diverse range of programmes and activities. The publication demonstrates that the work of the various parts of the United Nations system is complementary and covers all 15 priority areas of the World Programme of Action for Youth that was adopted by the General Assembly. By taking stock of UN system activities related to youth, the publication also provides a chance to assess how effectively the United Nations system is responding to the youth development challenge. It is intended as a source of information to assist stakeholders and to ensure that the United Nations truly delivers as one in the area of youth.
YOUTH AND CLIMATE CHANGE: TIME FOR ACTION Today is World Youth Day, a day that youth organisations and movements worldwide gather to take action and stand up on climate change. A major focus of the Day is practical action to further encourage the empowerment and participation of youth in the processes and decisions that affect their lives. The media have especially important role to play in support of the observance of the Day to promote public awareness of youth issues.
- By Sandra van Beest, Youth Representative to the United Nations, 2007-2008. As youth representative of the Netherlands I have had the opportunity to represent Dutch young people at the United Nations. Through writing proposals for UN resolutions, negotiating to get the proposals in the UN Resolutions and through addressing the General Assembly, I hope I did my peers justice. When I was in New York however, most of the topics that were discussed concerned young people in developing countries who make up 80% of the world’s youth. Yet they were hardly represented at the UN.
I’m happy to present to you a new website which I developed & designed together with the UN Youth Representative Wouter Thiebou. This new website, vnjongeren.nl, aims to build a community for Dutch youths interested in the work and themes of the United Nations. Visitors can make their own account and start publishing articles, reviews or opinions on issues relating to human rights, international development, politics, conflict & security, environment, education, The MDGs, etc. Furthermore, the website provides a short overview of who the UN Youth Group The Netherlands is, what activities they organize and how they try to contribute their small part to a better world… The website is still under development, so suggestions for improvement are always welcome!
During his visit to India, prince Willem Alexander recently delivered a speech during Seminar ‘Water and Microfinance’ in New Delhi. At the same time, our new Dutch Youth Representative to the United Nations, Wouter Thiebou, is getting clean and safe drinking water on the international policies agenda, while it seems at the same time a more or less neglected issue. That becomes clear when realizing that 1.2 billion citizens are not getting access to clean drinking water yet… Here’s an excerpt from the speech of His Highness the Prince of Orange, Willem Alexander: Ladies and gentlemen, The UNDP Human Development Report last year explicitly expressed that, when it comes to water, there is a growing recognition that the world faces a crisis that, left unchecked, will derail progress towards the Millennium Development Goals and hold back human development. World wide 1.2 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water and 2.6 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation. As a result every year some 1.8 million children die from diarrhoea [should be diarrhea...] and other diseases. That equals 5000 children per day, every day again. More people die from water related diseases than from HIV/AIDS, a staggering conclusion [...]
