Global climate change is perhaps the most pressing and important problem currently facing humanity. It is also unique by virtue of being a truly systemic problem of vast complexity: it affects every one of us, and is directly affected by every one of our actions. Like nothing else, dealing with climate change calls upon us to engage in effective collective decision making on a global scale. The spectacular emergence of the Internet and associated information technology has enabled unprecedented opportunities for such interactions. To date, however, these interactions have been incoherent and dispersed, contributions vary widely in quality, and there has been no clear way to converge on well-supported decisions concerning what actions, both grand and ground-level, humanity should take to solve its most pressing problems. The goal of this project is to address this important challenge through the creation of a new class of web-mediated discussion and decision making forum, called the “Collaboratorium”. This system, currently under development, will use an innovative combination of internet-mediated interaction, collectively generated idea repositories, computer simulation, and explicit representation of argumentation to help large, diverse, and geographically-dispersed groups systematically explore, evaluate, and come to decisions concerning systemic challenges.
With six months left to the Copenhagen climate negotiations the world faces multiple crises. All are a direct or indirect result of an economic policy that stimulates value creation on the short term with disastrous effects on the medium or long term. Sustainable development forms the core of the solutions for these crises. Between 1992, when the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was singed, and 2012, when the Kyoto Protocol’s objectives must be realised, 7300 days have passed and worldwide CO2 emissions have been reduced by 5,3%. Between December 2009 and 2020, which is 3650 days, the world should lessen over 30% in their CO2 emissions. That means that in half the time we must realise six times more emission reduction than in the twenty years before. These figures show that if we want to solve the multiple crises we need to act now. There have been attempts to speed up this process but all failed. One of the most important reasons was the enormous distrust between nations to implement and execute the proposed plans. The USA are waiting for countries like China, India and Brazil to take action, but these countries are waiting for the USA to [...]

‘If we can improve the images of the world, perhaps we can improve the world’ Wim Wenders Wim Wenders’ words have perhaps never been more relevant to a movie than in the case of Home. Following directly on from Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, Home is, of course, a film with a message that sets out to shift people’s perceptions, make us aware of the tectonic movements at work and incite us to act. Although there is a general trend in our societies towards an awareness of ecological issues, concrete action is still too little, too slow—which constitutes in some ways the creed of the movie: It’s too late to be a pessimist. But Home is more than a documentary with a message, it’s a magnificent movie in its own right. Every breathtaking shot shows the Earth—our Earth—as we have never seen it before. Every image seems to be saying, “Look how beautiful the Earth is, look at what we’re destroying, and above all look at all these wonders that we can still preserve.” When I started working on the project with Yann, I was convinced that the idea of shooting a movie entirely from up in the sky, without [...]

What are the legal and human rights implications of climate change? As the evidence becomes stronger and the science more serious, people in countries, companies, institutions and professions everywhere are taking up the issue of climate change and sounding the alarm. Among these concerned global citizens are lawyers and legal professionals. To gather this community together, law students at the University of Washington organized a conference called Three Degrees: The Law of Climate Change and Human Rights Conference. On May 28 and 29, members of the legal community and others came together to further explore the possibility of using human rights law as a way to address climate change. According to the conference organizers, “the application of both codified and customary international and national human rights law will be critical in addressing the massive humanitarian crises ignored by technical market solutions to climate change and moderate political reforms.” Read more at Worldchanging… People who looked at this item also looked at… Climate Collaboratorium: Harnessing Collective Intelligence to Address Climate Change Issues Green Economy Initiative Related items HOME: It’s Too Late To Be A Pessimist Green Economy Initiative Earth Hour How our economy is killing the Earth The Climate for Change

On 22 October 2008, UNEP and leading economists launched the Green Economy Initiative (GEI) aimed at seizing an historic opportunity to bring about tomorrow’s economy today. The GEI, which will initially run for a period of two years, has three key elements: the Green Economy report, that will provide an overview, analysis and synthesis of how public policy can help markets accelerate the transition towards a green economy; The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB), a partnership project focusing on valuation issues; and finally the Green Jobs report, published in September 2008, that looked at employment trends.
It a time of rising unemployment and economic insecurity, some argue that protecting the environment is a ‘luxury’; but a new report, Tackling Climate Change, Reducing Poverty shows that tackling climate change actually offers a huge opportunity to boost the economy and tackle UK poverty at the same time. For example, government investment in home insulation, public transport and community projects to improve local resilience would not only cut carbon emissions, they would also create new ‘green collar jobs’ and help those living on low incomes. The report, from a new coalition of leading UK environmental and social justice groups (convened by Oxfam and nef, including Friends of the Earth and the Royal College of Nursing) called on government to take a joined-up approach to tackling climate change and poverty.
The graphs climbing across these pages (see graph in detail, or explore the data) are a stark reminder of the crisis facing our planet. Consumption of resources is rising rapidly, biodiversity is plummeting and just about every measure shows humans affecting Earth on a vast scale. Most of us accept the need for a more sustainable way to live, by reducing carbon emissions, developing renewable technology and increasing energy efficiency. But are these efforts to save the planet doomed? A growing band of experts are looking at figures like these and arguing that personal carbon virtue and collective environmentalism are futile as long as our economic system is built on the assumption of growth. The science tells us that if we are serious about saving Earth, we must reshape our economy. This, of course, is economic heresy. Growth to most economists is as essential as the air we breathe: it is, they claim, the only force capable of lifting the poor out of poverty, feeding the world’s growing population, meeting the costs of rising public spending and stimulating technological development – not to mention funding increasingly expensive lifestyles. They see no limits to that growth, ever. Read the full article [...]

When the 44th President of the United States is elected, he will face urgent crises on three major fronts: the American economy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the growing threat to the world environment caused by climate change. This short, powerful book shows the way forward: a clear action plan for the new President’s first 100 days, that if implemented will set America on course for dynamic job creation and economic growth, reduce our conflicted dependence on foreign oil, and produce energy that is green, affordable, and renewable. Backed by sound science and based on the best ideas of America’s experts, The 100 Day Action Plan to Save the Planet outlines practical steps that include: Launch a “clean energy surge” and create a powerful new workforce of green manufacturing, supply, technology, management, and support jobs. End carbon subsidies that make fossil fuels much cheaper than their actual cost. Create a market by requiring all federal buildings, facilities, and transportation to be fueled by renewable green energy. Reward innovation and early adoption of renewable energy in the private sector. Work constructively with other nations for global solutions to the climate crisis. It’s not too late; climate change can be [...]

The world needs leaders with the vision to forge New Deal-type policies to confront the potentially disastrous combination of climate change, high inflation and economic slowdown, a British research group said. The recommendation is made in “A New Green Deal,” a report by the New Economics Foundation. It uses the convergence of the credit crisis, climate change and booming food and fuel prices to argue for new economic policies similar to those instituted in the United States from 1933 to 1938. Read more at the International Herald Tibune, or at the New Economics Foundation. You can download the report here. Also in The Netherlands, the buzz is in, by Green Party leader Femke Halsema urging for a Green Deal in the Netherlands to revive from the credit crisis and to develop (a.o.) moral codes of behaviour and investment for banks. Let’s see how this works out in some months, when the big international banks probably fail to stay alive, despite the huge injections from governments in the US and major European countries. Are we ready for a Green New Deal? Or already too late? Related items The Climate for Change The truth beyond the food crisis HOME: It’s Too Late To [...]

I fear I may have poisoned my objectivity on this one after a recent post I did on Sarah Palin and her views on the cause of global warming; there’s no getting around that Gov. Palin’s viewpoint is at odds with what I consider to be good policy and sound science. Palin’s views aside though, the good thing about both Barack Obama and John McCain is the both have indicated that they will take action to combat global warming: Which is reassuring considering a number of sobering statements made towards the end of the summer about the state of arctic climate change.
Green is the new black. No buzz-phrase better sums up both the excitement many of us feel about the blooming environmental and social consciousness around us and the essential hollowness of the answers being promoted by many newly-minted eco-pundits. The flood of environmental magazine cover stories, documentaries and advertisements has pushed us over a public-opinion threshold, which is great. But the solutions being touted by many of our new-found allies are themselves creating a new kind of problem — people who should know better are selling a muddle-headed, style-over-substance, “lite green” environmentalism at a time when we need to be rebuilding our civilization to avoid disaster. To be blunt, we’re being sold out.
YOUTH AND CLIMATE CHANGE: TIME FOR ACTION Today is World Youth Day, a day that youth organisations and movements worldwide gather to take action and stand up on climate change. A major focus of the Day is practical action to further encourage the empowerment and participation of youth in the processes and decisions that affect their lives.
Usually I’m quite an optimist when talking about future-related trends, how to act on climate change etc. But this article in The Guardian struck me quite a lot… Time is fast running out to stop irreversible climate change, a group of global warming experts warns today. We have only 100 months to avoid disaster. Andrew Simms explains why we must act now – and where to begin. Read more at The Guardian… or check the One Hundred Months website. At the same time in the US, in a crucial period where it is on the brink to cast its vote on a new American president, former vice-president Al Gore challenges America to shift to 100% renewables-based energy within 10 years, to get rid of its oil dependency, to avoid fatal consequences of climate change and to tackle the soaring oil prices at the same [...]
